ANTI-HALATION BACKING [Film Technology]

ANTI-HALATION BACKING
[Film Technology]

Anti-halation backing is under the base of film (i.e. Film base). Film raw stock for motion picture camera, the transparent support or base, is coated with a light sensitized emulsion and generally, an anti-halation backing. Black anti-halo backing, chemically removable while developing. See anti-halation layer. See backing removal. A light absorbing layer. Many types of film also include an anti-halation or light absorbing layer either  below the emulsion or on the reverse side of the base. This prevents light from reflecting and passing through emulsion a second time. Light absorbing layer in raw stock that prevents reflection of light back into the light sensitive emulsion. After passing through the three colour sensitive layers, light passes through the film base, but is absorbed by the anti-halation layer (usually an emulsion of carbon particles coated on the reverse side of the film. Which acts to prevents any strong light from reflecting internally and re-exposing the film. Many colour stocks incorporate an antihalation layer of carbon coated on to the back of the film.
