The director of photography should have a working
knowledge of the different systems of process
photography so that he may use them to
create special effect or to reduce
production cost. Traveling matte or blue backing is a process of adding background at the printing stage. In this case the
artists or objects in the foreground are
photographed against an intensely blue background
which may subsequently be used as a matte in the
optical prints. Unlike front
projection or back projection, with traveling matte the composite
scene is not achieved until after optical
printing.
