As walls are
progressively shaded the background is
transformed from a blank, open, spacious surface
tone implying the presence of a ceiling, and
giving a sense of enclosure. Extensive shading conveys intimacy, cosiness,
compactness and a confined space, even oppressiveness where top shading is
heavy. A naturally confined space (boat, aircraft, train, tent) is imitated
more convincingly with top shading and base shading.
