Pattern can be used decoratively, or to concentrate attention. Note, the key and the pattern can be from different lamps. Where patterns are projected on to decorated background the effect of both are nullified. Plain backgrounds display shadow effects most successfully. Over all sharpness is difficult with oblique projection angles. Notice how attention is drawn to sharper regions. Sharp contrasty patterns create a dynamic, vigorous impact. The same pattern defocused, results in a vague, nebulous, or delicate effect. When projected pattern denotes the scene its shapes are arresting, strong, powerful.
