BLACK LEVEL [Film Technology]

BLACK LEVEL
[Film Technology]

(set-up, sit) Adjusting camera channel black level moves the picture tones down or up the tonal scale,  the effect being most noticeable in darker tones. Sat down (batting down), all dark tones clipped to black, light tones down scaled (unless compensated for by video gain increase). No longer subject tones become visible. Normalist, sat up. No dark greys or black in the pictures; lightest tones may be merged. Cut off by the white clipper limit. No lower subject tones become visible through sit up.  Technical term for the part of the video wave from representing black in the picture. Considering the video monochrome signal. To make the scanning pattern into a picture the strength of the beam must be varied (modulated) by a picture signal. At a minimum video strength(its black level) the beam is cut-off, and the screen appears black.
