BLACK AND WHITE REVERSAL FILM DEVELOPING [Film Technology]

BLACK AND WHITE REVERSAL FILM DEVELOPING
[Film Technology]

The film first passes through a normal black and white developer.  This results in a developed  silver image in the exposed areas of the film, while unexposed areas remain as silver bromide.  After a stop bath the film passes into a bleach solution, which contains oxidizing agent to reconvert the silver into the ionized form and dissolve it.  A cleaning bath removes residual deposit of oxidized bleach, after which the  film is left with a  residue  of silver halide in inverse proportion to the original negative image.  After exposing on fogging the film with white light, the film passes into a second developer which converts all the silver halide into metallic silver.  After fixing and wash, there remains a silver image in the originally-unexposed areas, so that darken areas of the film correspond to shadows, with increasing exposure resulting in lighter areas of the image; a direct copy of the original.
